The Importance Of Chuck Jaws In The Production Of Metal Components

In the world of manufacture the use of rotary tables is commonplace for those looking to shape metal components. Their job is to hold the metal work piece in position as tools are brought against it to shape it as required. In order to allow the creation of more complex shapes ; the rotary table also rotates and thus allows tools to approach from different angles. Although a rotary table is one of the most important tools in metal component machining; its role cannot be completed without the assistance of chuck jaws. Here we take a quick look at chuck jaws and consider their role in the machining process.

The basics

Chuck jaws are essentially the clamping mechanism that holds the metal work piece in place. They most commonly consist of three jaws that can be mounted via T-slots onto the rotary table. In addition to standard versions there are more specialised models that are suitable for a variety of uses. An example of such chucks jaws are bar grippers that are meant to assist in the shaping of bar-like objects.

How they work

In the majority of environments chuck jaws are operated using computer commands which control the clamping. However, when the work piece is of an irregular shape it is often the case that chuck jaws have to be tightened manually. By doing so the operator is able to position the jaws at variable distances from the rotary table centre. Where irregular shaped pieces are being made it will normally be the case that four jaws will be used rather than three.

Ensuring quality

Manufacturers must continue to manufacture quality items in order to ensure repeat custom and maintain safety. In order to do this they must purchase quality chuck jaws that are made from high level materials and which will not wear quickly. Failure to do so can see accuracy levels fall outside the standards that manufacturers set themselves.
