Top St Patrick’s Tune Revealed
St Patrick’s Day celebrations nowadays are filled with fun and excitement and music is a key part of this. Right across the globe people enjoy St Patrick’s parades, festivals and concerts to mark this internationally renowned day. And the world of music online has also been playing a part in the festivities.
In 2010, fans of the online music-streaming site Spotify have been casting their votes to decide the ultimate St Patrick’s playlist. The Pogues, featuring The Dubliners, were revealed as top of the chart with a cheerful jig celebrating the life and adventures of the ‘Irish Rover’ – a fictional sailing ship. The Pogues joined forces with the Irish folk legends to recount the story of a ship that meets a watery end, leaving just one final member of crew to tell the tale.
The song was up against strong competition from the twenty four other songs nominated for the playlist, with artists including U2 and Snowpatrol, as well as entries from Johnny Cash – with Danny Boy – and Thin Lizzy with Whiskey in the Jar. Also featured in the playlist were Belfast boy Van Morrison with Brown Eyed Girl, Celtic rockers The Waterboys with The Whole of the Moon, talented Irish vocalist Mary Black with her song Katie, alongside Ash, Glen Hansard & Marketa Iglova, Divine Comedy, Roisin Murphy, and Damien Rice.
Fans getting involved in the project were able to visit the St Patrick’s Day Spotify page to learn more about the nominees as well as vote for their favourite track. Those taking part have also been entered into a competition draw to win an exciting Rock n Roll Weekend in Dublin including a two-night stay in the penthouse suite at the five star Clarence Hotel, owned by Bono and The Edge from U2. Added to this, the prize included a gig at the Button Factory and a Rock n Stroll tour.
